The Spacecraft Power Engineer is primarily responsible for the creation, development, and maturation of alternate and innovative concept studies for subsystems, spacecraft systems, payloads, and space launch transportation systems.
Serves as an expert supporting a broad range of inter-disciplinary studies including research, design, analysis, and prototype development of spacecraft power systems specifically:
Technology assessment and planning
Advanced concept development from definition through preliminary design
Integrated systems analysis
Technical decision analysis
Analysis and innovative strategies to facilitate utilization of MSFC technical capabilities
Establishment of technical mission objectives
Development of concept and configuration alternatives
System modeling and simulations
Optimization and trade studies involving technical, cost, schedule, and their associated risks related to safety, affordability, and reliability
Providing support as a study lead may also be required
Makes recommendations and implements actions involving highly complex technical problems, including those that apply to complex integrated systems in areas such as launch vehicle design and spacecraft operations.
Defines unknown conditions, resolves critical design problems, or develops new design theories.
Publishes technical data and develops scientifically based standards for engineering applications. Serves as liaison between research, design, and operations.
Supports development of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools within ACO. Coordinates efforts with stakeholders both internal and external customers.
Candidates for this position must have a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field with 30 years applicable experience is required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution preferred. The candidate shall be experienced with Microsoft Office products such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word and be proficient in Java, C, Visual Basic, VBA, and/or FORTRAN. Proficiency is also required with Windows and Linux operating systems.
The candidate must have experience applicable to preliminary design studies, which includes the establishment of technical mission objectives, mission planning, development of concept and configuration alternatives, system modeling and simulations, optimization and trade studies involving technical, cost, schedule, and their associated risks related to safety, affordability, and reliability. The candidate must have experience in power, avionics, risk, and modeling and simulation as needed to support the formulation and evaluation of MSFC programs and projects.
Experience conducting subsystem analysis, transportation architecture trade studies, and integrated mission and system analyses, and risk analysis is required. Knowledge of advanced space system technologies is also highly desired.
Additional position requirements are:
At least ten years of experience supporting MSFC Advanced Concepts Office.
Experience with developing proposals or providing supporting information.
Must demonstrate initiative and be proactive to make connections and build relationships with key customers, both internal and external.
Desired skills in managing stakeholder relations and conceptual design project planning.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to integrate with a diverse team.
Demonstrated capability to perform analyses independently and with a team is highly desired.
Demonstrated strong technical writing and presentation skills in order to present data to study customers.
